Graduate and Postgraduate Education

The Second School of Medicine, Wenzhou Medical University (The Second Affiliated Hospital and Yuying Children's Hospital) takes "integrity, dedication, perfection, and innovation" as its motto and “a distinctive, first-class research and teaching hospital and a national-level regional medical center” as its goal. It has three campuses: Longwan Campus (including the Rehabilitation Center), Lucheng Campus (including Xueyuan Road Branch and Nanpu Branch), and Oujiangkou Campus. Among them, the Longwan Campus is a medical center for adults and focuses on oncology and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; the Lucheng Campus focuses on obstetrics & gynecology, and pediatrics; and the Oujiangkou Campus mainly focuses on orthopedics and trauma. The school has 4 Primary Category Discipline Ph.D. Programs and 13 Primary Category Discipline Master Programs. It serves as a practice base for undergraduate and postgraduate overseas students of clinical medicine in WMU, thus establishing an all-round, multi-level talent development system encompassing the education of undergraduate, master, doctor, post-doctor, post-graduation, and overseas students. It is the vice-chairman unit of the National Teaching Steering Committee of Pediatrics under the Ministry of Education and has four national-level first-class disciplines (Clinical Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine).

The school has more than 1,200 postgraduate students, including 1,090 master's students, 96 doctoral students, and 23 international students. It has 329 postgraduate supervisors, including 50 doctoral supervisors. Our school is one of the first national resident standardized training bases. At present, it has 22 resident standardized training bases and four specialist standardized training bases. The school took the lead in formulating the specialized training standards for pediatric anesthesia. It has created its unique resident standardized training model with characteristics of “hierarchical progression, spiral rise, post responsibility, and strengthened supervision.” The principles of “hierarchical progression, spiral rise” are adopted and promoted by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association as the basic principles for national resident standardized training. Our training bases for pediatrics, general medicine, and surgery have been selected as national key resident standardized training bases. Our pass rate of the national residential training final theoretical examination ranked first among general hospitals in Zhejiang Province for nine consecutive years. Our performance in the annual residential training test ranked 7th nationwide in 2020 and has been ranked first among provincial general hospitals in Zhejiang province for four consecutive years. Besides, we have chief-edited and published five books on developing competency for residential training.

The school strengthens the primary responsibility of supervisors, implements the fundamental task of cultivating virtuous talents, and actively explores and optimizes the team of postgraduate supervisors to cultivate outstanding and innovative medical talents. It has actively created domestic and international academic exchange opportunities for postgraduates, encouraged collaboration among supervisor teams and the participation of young faculty in postgraduate education, and optimized the structure of the supervisor team by introducing high-level talents from home and abroad. In the past three years, six supervisors received the "Renowned Physician of the Nation: Outstanding Achievements" Award, the "People's Renowned Physician: Excellent Model" Award, the China Pediatric Outstanding Contribution Physician Award, the China Neonatology Physician Award, and the "Most Beautiful Young Pediatrician" Award respectively, and 13 supervisors were awarded the title of "Most Beautiful Supervisor" by WMU.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, our postgraduate students published a total of 230 articles in SCI journals, with an impact factor of up to 29.7 (published in Circulation), and the excellent and good rate of the dissertations reached 99.4% and 98.2% respectively, with four master's theses recognized as excellent at the provincial level. The employment rate for the 2022 graduating class was 100%, with most graduates finding jobs in tertiary Grade A hospitals and medical institutions within the province. The admission rate for doctoral programs among master's students reached 18.6%. Over the years, our graduates have been accepted into renowned institutions both domestically and internationally, including King's College London, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
